Visit the WWF OASIS in Morigerati
The WWF Oasis “Bussento Caves” is an area of 600 hectares protected since the 1995 where you can walk through a luxuriant vegetation along an easy path that leads from the old town centre of Morigerati to the Cave where the karstic river Bussento flows back to the surface after about 4 km underground. The waters, which flow from the Cave, are karst springs when the flow rate is abundant, in winter, and spring, while in summer they are just spring waters. Within the WWF Oasis, it is also possible to admire plays of water and spectacular waterfalls created by the Bussento River.
The vegetation at the bottom of the gorge is characterized by the presence of mosses, ferns and alders and willows shrubs. In the wood the plant life is made up of holm oaks, downy oaks, ash trees, hornbeams and predominant is the Mediterranean scrub.
The clear waters of the rivers of the river hold a thriving marine life with trout, crayfishes, crabs and we can find also the traces of the otter. In this paradise, in the heart of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, live also mammals such as porcupine, wild cat and wolf, and numerous species of bird of prey such as: kestrel, goshawk, black kite, red kite and common raven.
The entrance to the cave, lit by the sun, is really spectacular, since you can enter through a portal 20 meters high and 10 meters wide, descending a staircase carved into the limestone and passing through a wooden bridge crossing the river that flows from the rock below
The river Bussento:
The river Bussento rises from the southern slope of Mount Cervati, 900 meters above the sea level, from the source “Varco la Peta” in the small town of Sanza (Sa). After about 20 km it flows into the artificial lake Sabetta. Then, near Caselle in Pittari (Sa), the river Bussento sinks into a large sinkhole passing under the Mount Panello, to re-surfaces after about 4 km in the area of Morigerati. After being swelled by the Bussentino tributary river, it flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the Gulf of Policastro.
